Se penso che questo castello nacque per mano di Federico II, quando la terra d’Italia attirava maestranze, intellettuali, artisti dall’Oriente e dall’Europa! E adesso protegge il re di uno stato che conta i suoi morti, fra le macerie! Quanta disperazione, nell’entrare in città, fra gli sfollati, e le madri angosciate perché da mesi non hanno più notizia di marito e figli! Per i prossimi mesi Brindisi sarà la capitale di quel che resta dell’Italia, e il castello la sede del governo. Mi hanno detto che qui era stato adibito un penitenziario, ai tempi di Napoleone, e di Murat. E davvero, in questo momento, ci si sente prigionieri di un tempo che sembra chiudersi, cupo, su di noi, e non lasciarci intravedere più il domani.

If I think that this castle was built by Federico II, when Italy used to lure in master craftsmen, intellectuals, artists from the East and Europe! And truly,in this moment, we feel captive of a time that seems to close on us, dark, hiding the future from our sight.
