Palazzo Tupputi

TEXT
It's late at night, in Bisceglie, but someone is still awake, at the first floor of marquises Tipputi's palace. A secret meeting is taking place and a young man, not yet in his thirties, is officiating it. He's a Carbonari member, a captain, a dreamer. Peek from behind the closed shutters, lend an ear to the palace's closed door, an listen to his words!
I'm telling you it's time, gentlemen! The whole world is waking up, people are learning to claim their freedom back! You all know what happened in Spain, in Cádiz, last January. The military, gentlemen! Army officers refused to leave for the Americas to fight against the indipendent governments that are forming there, too. Facts tell us that it didn't go well, that's true, but let's remember that our friends obtained a Constitution from King Ferdinand! And in Sicilia, just a few months ago, who would have ever predicted that a few thousands people could manage, even if for just a few days, to establish a government, in Palermo, with the British backing them!?!! Trustworthy voices reached me of new uprisings in Napoli, and in Piemonte! State after state, city after city the desire for freedom walks, contagious, it spreads, and right in this moment it's knocking, I'm sure, on the doors of this palace on our proud chests! We are taking a great risk, that's true. We are putting at stake our own lives, our people's life, our families'. We all know how the repression axe fell after each act of rebellion. That's why today I'm not talking to you as a philosopher. I'm talking as a captain, who saw in Russia hundreds of thousands people fall chasing a ridiculous dream, in the cold and in the snow, following Napoleon. I felt already, on my skin, the weight of defeat the fear of death, that walks beside you and for some reason, that time, doesn't touch you. But I also knew the true joy of sharing with a comrade the common dream of a better life. I say that a different Puglia is possible, a land where we can feel at home, where we can wake up in the morning and breath deeply without feeling like we are steeling something. The town is asleep, right now, and most people is using their dreams to run away from this time of misery and oppression. But I'm telling you: let's do that journey in reverse. Let's dream to come home to a different reality where we are free and let's do this together, my friends, Carbonari members, sentinels. Let's dream, while we write the Constitution in the heart of Bisceglie!
