SHERAZADE

Ogni pomeriggio faccio via Regina Elena, con la mamma. Lei viene a prendermi, da casa dei nonni, quando ha finito di lavorare al magazzino di tabacco, e insieme camminiamo nel centro di Giuliano. Ma questa strada non è come le altre. Ci rapisce, a tutti e due, ci confonde, ci fa dimenticare che stiamo camminando, e dove stiamo andando. Lei inizia a leggere frasi scolpite sulle porte delle case, parole che io ancora non capisco, ma che lei ripete più volte a voce alta, come una specie di proverbio o di comandamento da sapere.Io invece conto i passi che mancano al balcone dei folletti. Quindici facce, che vengono fuori dalla pietra, alcune simpatiche, che mi sorridono, altre spaventose, con le orecchie a punta e le guance gonfie e la bocca storta. Dicono che portano fortuna, che servono ad allontanare gli spiriti cattivi, ma io, quando camminiamo sotto, stringo più forte la mano di mia madre, e spero che non si stacchino dalla loggia, per seguirmi, a Giuliano, lungo tutte le strade.
